U.S. Base
The U.S. Base viewed from the summit of South West Bay Red Hill.
Between March and July 1942 U.S. Army Engineers constructed the airfield which remained
operational until May 1947. In 1957 the U.S. presence returned with the establishment (at the
site shown in this view) of the base (2 km from the airfield) and tracking facilities for
the Eastern Test Range. Over the years the U.S. Base has undergone substantial growth and
modernisation.
